NEW YORK — From JustLeadershipUSA (JLUSA) President and CEO DeAnna Hoskins: “The end of Roe v. Wade signals more surveillance, targeting, and criminalization of marginalized communities and expansion of the consequences for millions of people. We must continue our aim of racial and economic justice, which includes abortion access for all.
“This—like other recent decisions from this court—is a betrayal of fundamental human rights and constitutional freedoms. Let’s also be clear: At a time when we’ve been making significant progress in decriminalizing drugs and seeing a decline in prison admissions, this Supreme Court decision has cast a new net to replace any reduction or progress we have made.
”This only emboldens us to double down on our efforts to empower and elevate our voices and our stories to end mass criminalization and incarceration and invest in building our local communities.”

The nation’s prisons and jails have been in crisis long before COVID-19. This is because most correctional facilities do not have plans in place to deal with any kind of emergency, be it a pandemic, a flood or a cyber attack.
This must change.
Directly impacted people are the best voices to help change our country’s discriminatory policies. We have policy solutions to appropriately manage the range of disasters that impact correctional facilities nationwide, uplift the dignity and humanity of incarcerated people, and decarcerate the United States.
Join us, and tell your elected officials to adopt these solutions, now.
