JLUSA is building and activating the network of leaders needed to initiate and lead policy reform efforts in their communities and to connect that local power to a broad, national movement. Through our Leadership in Action initiatives, we forge intersectional partnerships across organizations and build relationships with policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels in order to dismantle racist and oppressive systems. We walk the walk. We are led by people directly impacted by the criminal legal system, we have campaign and leadership training experience and expertise, and we have an expanding base of trained community leaders.
JustLeadershipUSA’s 2021-2024 Roadmap is the first of its kind to be informed by the expertise of formerly incarcerated leaders. The Roadmap identifies and describes bold, positive actions that can be taken at the federal level–some relatively quickly–to address the nation’s crisis of mass incarceration, to meet the basic human needs of more than 70 million individuals living with a criminal history, and to provide pathways to opportunities for those currently incarcerated.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought to the fore a matter of life and death in our nation’s prisons and jails: the lack of emergency management plans in case of public health, environmental, and other crises. In response, JLUSA launched the #JustUs Campaign — a nationwide call for policymakers to decarcerate the United States by immediately adopting a series of recommendations which were developed in collaboration with medical and public health experts.

The nation’s prisons and jails have been in crisis long before COVID-19. This is because most correctional facilities do not have plans in place to deal with any kind of emergency, be it a pandemic, a flood or a cyber attack.
This must change.
Directly impacted people are the best voices to help change our country’s discriminatory policies. We have policy solutions to appropriately manage the range of disasters that impact correctional facilities nationwide, uplift the dignity and humanity of incarcerated people, and decarcerate the United States.
Join us, and tell your elected officials to adopt these solutions, now.
