The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a matter of life and death in the nation’s prisons and jails: the lack of emergency management plans in case of public health, environmental, and other crises, such as extreme heat.
In response, JLUSA launched the #JustUs Campaign — a nationwide call for policymakers to decarcerate the United States by adopting a series of recommendations which were developed in collaboration with formerly incarcerated individuals, along with legal and public health experts.

One positive outcome of the #JustUs Campaign has been the re-introduction of federal legislation by U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Cory Booker (D-NJ).
The Correctional Facility Disaster Preparedness Act would require the Bureau of Prisons to take measures to ensure the health and safety of people in federal prisons during disasters declared by the President.

JLUSA will continue to advocate for the adoption of the #JustUs policy recommendations at the federal, state, and local levels until adequate emergency management plans are in place in every correctional facility. The safety and dignity of incarcerated people will not only be a consideration in times of emergency, but at all times.
